Whale shark season is from early June to mid September. Snorkeling with these docile creatures is an amazing experience (scuba diving is prohibited under Mexican law). Their migration takes them through the Mexican Caribbean as they follow the plankton blooms. The whale shark snorkeling tour is an all day/all inclusive tour that includes transportation from your resort and back, continental breakfast at the dock before departure, full equipment rental, lunch, snacks and beverages (please give notice of dietary restrictions). The departure pier is just north of Cancun, at the Flamingos marina. The boat ride takes about 60-90 minutes and we spend about three hours with the whale sharks (you are allowed in multiple times). At the end of the tour there is a short time to snorkel the coral reef or just relax in the crystal clear, north beach at Isla Mujeres. The tour cost is $250 US dollars per person. The payment is split, $225 to be paid in advance and $25 dollars paid in cash on the day of the tour for the dock/marine park fee. The tour goes from about 6 am to about 3:30 pm. There are a maximum of 10 guests in the boat and just two people in the water, with the guide, at any one time. The tours run daily, with the exception of the 30th of each month. We want to pick the day with the calmest possible weather, since you are out on the boat most of the day. It is best to reserve with a few days' notice, once we can see the forecast for your available dates. When we are lucky, we can also see turtles, manta rays and sometimes even dolphins on the whale shark tours. Private tours are available. Children under 3 and pregnant persons are prohibited for their safety.
$25 US dollar conservation tax due in cash, per person, on the day of the tour.
Be sure to bring a towel and a dry change of clothes. Sun screen is prohibited by law, so wear UV protective clothing such as a rash guard or swim shirt.
